Councilmember Al Austin
Councilmember Al Austin II has served on the Long Beach City Council since 2012. Councilmember Austin represents Council District 8, which includes neighborhoods in Uptown Long Beach like Bixby Knolls and North Long Beach.
Councilmember Austin is proud to support local arts and artists, and he has worked closely with several organizations to make the 8th District an artistic hub in the city. The city-owned Expo Arts Center, which includes the Austin's Field Office, is a multi-venue space for visual and performing arts. It features a kids’ theater, improvisation classes, several galleries, and it regularly hosts concerts and performances. Councilmember Austin has partnered to develop several murals throughout the district, including some completed as part of Pow!Wow! Long Beach. The 8th District is also home to many arts and cultural institutions, including the Long Beach Shakespeare Company, Rancho Los Cerritos, Historical Society of Long Beach, as well as free summer concerts and the popular monthly First Fridays Art Walk in Bixby Knolls. Councilmember Austin has also added more than 40 acres of new park space, created a community program to provide free exercise and activities for hundreds of seniors at the Expo Arts Center, and has served as a regional leader on issues such as transportation, economic development and sustainable planning.
